Coastal Winemaking

All of the winemaking at SCV is directed by master winemaker Anthony Austin, who brings his vast knowledge, incredible artistry and experience to SCV's mission of producing exceptional wines from the Sonoma Coast appellation. By carefully selecting the vineyards and working closely with each grower, Anthony obtains ripe, balanced fruit from this climate-challenged environment.

Anthony focus on vineyard management, minimal intervention and careful guidance to bring out the best of the Sonoma Coast:

  • Quality vs. Quantity: Struggling vines concentrate more of their energies on fruit production. Sonoma Coast Vineyards wants the best – flavorful grapes that average an extremely low 120 – 130 gallons per ton.

  • Mature fruit at lower sugar levels.

  • Physiological maturity: mature flavors and mature tannins, essential for wines displaying complexity and balance.

Artisanal Methods

Winemaking focuses on artisanal methods to craft our complex and elegant ultra-premium wines:

  • Hand-picked and sorted fruit

  • Early morning harvesting with fruit in a cold state

  • Gentle whole cluster pressing

  • Extended cold soaks up to 10 days

  • Hand punch downs 2 to 3 times per day

  • Small lot winemaking

  • Blending of small lots for complexity

  • French oak barrel primary and malolactic fermentation sur lie

  • Light filtration

Our wines can sustain extended development time in barrel in order to achieve maximum complexity. Aging in French oak cooperage complements the fruit and ensures the wines will age beautifully for many years.
