The 2008 vintage on the Sonoma Coast began with a difficult spring which brought frost and cold rains that damaged buds, resulting in lower than normal yields. Fortunately, summer provided near perfect weather with warm days and cool nights. An Indian summer arrived on the Sonoma Coast in late September and pushed ripeness levels along to enhance flavors. The lower yields provided exceptional fruit quality for our 2008 Syrah. Occidental Road Vineyard was planted in 1998, and sits on the northern end of the Sonoma Coast growing region in the upper western corner far enough inland to provide Syrah the benefits of cold climate viticulture while at the same time, allowing full development. It is the perfect site for our vision of Syrah offering both balance and power.

"The 2008 is a powerful wine that is displaying complexity and a distinct richness of fruit. The aromatic profile is ripe blackberry and black cherry that combines with licorice and spice. There are soft vanilla toasty notes as well. The flavor profile is lush blackberry spicy cassis, and bittersweet chocolate. The tannins are well developed and remain soft and well integrated. The wine is balanced beautifully by bright acidity which guarantees it to be a great food wine! This Syrah will continue to develop nicely over the next 5-years and then progress more slowly for 10-years beyond."

Vintage Notes:	The various lots were hand punched twice daily, then pressed, blended, and put into 50% new French oak to undergo malolactic fermentation. Tonnellerie Sirugue barrels (36-months air dried) were selected. The finesse and softness of French oak results in a distinct elegance. The wines were racked off the lees and returned to barrel for aging 22-months. The extended time in barrel speaks of the quality fruit, which allows us the opportunity to achieve complexity in barrel. Lots were blended to complement one another then lightly filtered prior to bottling in early August.
Harvest Notes:	The fruit was harvested by hand, in the early morning of October 23rd. It is not uncommon for Syrah to be harvested on the extreme Sonoma Coast as much as 30 to 60 days later than the rest of California. The brix levels ranged from 23-25 degrees with full development of the seed to a crunchy brown. Fruit was hand sorted and de-stemmed with 20% left whole cluster. The two clones (1 and 887), were kept separate through an extended seven day cold soak.
